The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) returned for its 20th edition on the 9th of January, 2018, to a flurry of excitement! Manufacturers from around the world showcased some of the most innovative technologies and gadgets we’ve ever seen, and experts are already predicting which tech trends will take over the industry and which will fall short of expectations. Here are the 4 we are most excited about: 1. Convertible Tablet Laptops/Laptop TabletsThe introduction of the capacitive touchscreen to the laptop industry has given way to a lot of experimentation with convertible devices, which have traditional interfaces and a wide array of functionalities. A great example of this is the new Lenovo X1 Yoga, which features a keyboard that can fold all the way back behind the device, allowing customers to use it as a pure tablet. This trend flattered to deceive in 2017, but we should see more adaptation this year as some of the larger manufacturers start to come out with their own high-end machines. 2. Smarter Home DevicesAmazon’s Alexa, the smart personal assistant for use in homes and offices, dominated computer technology news in 2017, and it could soon offer even more functionalities around the house. According to top experts of the tech industry, our daily-use devices, such as electrical appliances in the kitchen and living room, are about to get a whole lot smarter in the coming months, adapting to IoT trends. The IoT capability will mean that assistants like Alexa will be able to turn on your microwave, switch off your TV, or change the color of interior lighting, all at the touch of a simple button or through voice commands. 3. Augmented RealityTech experts have long been predicting that augmented reality will one-day take over from VR, and this year’s CES only reaffirmed their beliefs. Most of the world’s major smartphone manufacturers have already started work on their own AR-enabled handsets to compete with the new iPhone Apple X, and we could soon see a whole new sea of AR headsets flood the market. AR is expected to the win the virtual world’s battle over VR thanks to its more immersive user experience. 4. Wireless ChargingIt might have taken a few more years than many had predicted, but wireless for mobile devices is finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited! The increasing digitization and wireless nature of everything around us had started to make power chords feel like ancient technology, and it’s about time they were replaced with something smarter. Brands like Powercast and Energous showcased chargers that can send power to multiple devices over the air at the same time at the CES, and we could soon see phone charging cables go out of favor altogether.
